Professor Henryk Skarżyński, MD Hab.

Hen­ryk Skarżyńs­ki was born in Rosochate Koś­cielne in the Pod­lask­ie Voivode­ship in 1954. In 1979 he grad­u­at­ed from the Med­ical Acad­e­my in War­saw and began to work at the Depart­ment of Oto­laryn­gol­o­gy of the Cen­tral Clin­i­cal Hos­pi­tal, War­saw Med­ical Acad­e­my. He received his M.D. in 1983 and his post­grad­u­ate degree (Dr hab.) in 1989. He was nom­i­nat­ed asso­ciate pro­fes­sor of the Med­ical Acad­e­my in 1993 and obtained his full, tit­u­lar pro­fes­sor­ship in 1995.

In 1993 Pro­fes­sor H. Skarżyńs­ki found­ed “Cochlear Cen­tre”, the Diag­nos­tic, Ther­a­peu­tic and Reha­bil­i­ta­tion Cen­tre for the Deaf and Hard of Hear­ing. In 1996 this Cen­tre became the Insti­tute of Phys­i­ol­o­gy and Pathol­o­gy of Hear­ing and Pro­fes­sor H. Skarżyńs­ki was appoint­ed its Direc­tor. In 2003 an ultra­mod­ern diag­nos­tic, ther­a­peu­tic and reha­bil­i­ta­tion com­plex, the Inter­na­tion­al Hear­ing and Speech Cen­tre, was opened in Kaje­tany. Pro­fes­sor H. Skarżyńs­ki inspired and organ­ised this ini­tia­tive.

In 2002 Pro­fes­sor Hen­ryk Skarżyńs­ki became head of the Chair of Audi­ol­o­gy and Pho­ni­atrics at the Fry­deryk Chopin Acad­e­my of Music (now Fry­deryk Chopin Uni­ver­si­ty of Music) where he organ­ised a state of the art diag­nos­tic lab­o­ra­to­ry and, togeth­er with his col­lab­o­ra­tors, began to realise many orig­i­nal research projects con­cern­ing voice and speech, the devel­op­ment of audi­to­ry atten­tion, and the effects of music on the inner ear and intel­lec­tu­al devel­op­ment.

Pro­fes­sor H. Skarżyńs­ki is the author or co-author of over 800 sci­en­tif­ic works which he has pub­lished at home and abroad.

He is a mem­ber of many sci­en­tif­ic soci­eties includ­ing the pres­ti­gious world organ­i­sa­tion of oto­laryn­gol­o­gists, Col­legium Oto-Rhi­no-Laryn­go­log­icum Amici­ti­ae Sacrum. He is also the found­ing mem­ber of the Euro­pean Acad­e­my of Otol­ogy and Neu­ro-Otol­ogy (EAONO), elect­ed mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Acad­e­my of Audi­ol­o­gy, hon­orary mem­ber of the Slo­va­kian Oto­laryn­gol­o­gy, Head and Neck Surgery Asso­ci­a­tion, hon­orary pro­fes­sor of the Depart­ment of Audi­ol­o­gy and Speech Ther­a­py at Brigham Young Uni­ver­si­ty, Pro­vo, Utah, USA and mem­ber of the Euro­pean Soci­ety for Arti­fi­cial Organs.

Pro­fes­sor Hen­ryk Skarżyńs­ki has devel­oped and imple­ment­ed a num­ber of pro­to­types in Poland:

Pro­fes­sor Hen­ryk Skarżyńs­ki devel­oped and imple­ment­ed the first pro­gram in the world for the treat­ment of par­tial deaf­ness by means of cochlear implants, first in adults (2002) then in chil­dren (2004).
