The Chair of Sound Engi­neer­ing was found­ed in 1961 (for­mer­ly known as the Chair of Music Record­ing). Its long-term head was prof. Janusz Urbańs­ki, the co-founder of the Depart­ment of Sound Engi­neer­ing,. Lat­er on, it was head­ed by prof. Jan Szmań­da, prof. Antoni Karużas, prof. dr Hali­na Ciołkosz-Łupinowa, prof. Krzysztof Grabows­ki, prof. Niko­dem Wołk-Łaniews­ki. Cur­rent­ly, the Chair has been head­ed by prof. Andrzej Lupa.

The Chair of Sound Engi­neer­ing super­vis­es the teach­ing of main and major sub­jects for BA stud­ies and three spe­cial­ties of MA stud­ies: Music Pro­duc­tion, Film Sound Engi­neer­ing, and Sound Engi­neer­ing in the Mul­ti­me­dia.

The Chair’s artis­tic and aca­d­e­m­ic activ­i­ty focus­es around the issues con­nect­ed with aes­thet­i­cal top­ics of audi­to­ry and audio­vi­su­al arts and tech­ni­cal prob­lems of record­ing pro­duc­tion. Artis­tic work of the Chair’s employ­ees cov­ers music record­ings, film sound record­ings, elec­troa­coustic and elec­tron­ic music screen­ing, and sound screen­ing in mul­ti­me­dia instal­la­tions. Mem­bers of the Chair of Sound Engi­neer­ing have won numer­ous pres­ti­gious awards on pro­fes­sion­al fes­ti­vals and com­pe­ti­tions in Poland and abroad.

The Chair organ­is­es sym­posia, con­fer­ences and sem­i­nars devot­ed to aes­thet­i­cal and tech­ni­cal top­ics of audi­to­ry and audio­vi­su­al arts. Addi­tion­al­ly, its mem­bers and Depart­ment stu­dents active­ly par­tic­i­pate in annu­al­ly organ­ised con­fer­ences of the Audio Engi­neer­ing Soci­ety, enjoy­ing numer­ous suc­cess­es. Stu­dents’ achieve­ments are pre­sent­ed each year dur­ing con­certs giv­en by the Chair (music record­ings), “Film Sun­day” (film sound) and as part of the “Mul­ti­me­dia May Break” (mul­ti­me­dia sound).
