Laboratories being part of the Chair:

The history of the Chair of Music Education dates back to December 1961 when the Chair of Music Education Problems was established. Its Head was prof. Wincenty Laski who held this function until 1966. Later on, the Chair was headed by Feliks Kośnicki, Tadeusz Maklakiewicz, Antoni Szaliński and Maria Przychodzińska. The name and the programme of the Chair evolved along with the development and subsequent changes of the present Department of Choir Conducting, Music Education, Church Music, Rhythmics and Dance, previously known as the Department of Music Education. Hence, the Chair’s subsequent names were: Chair of Music Education Problems, Chair of Music Education, Chair of Music Education Methodics, and Chair of Music Education Theory.

From 1993, the work of the newly established Chair of Music Education was manager by prof. zw. dr hab. Zofia Konaszkiewicz, who at the same time became Head of the Inter-Department Teaching Course. She headed the Chair until she retired in 2015. In the academic year 2015/2016, the activity of the Chair was suspended to be resumed on 1 October 2016. Then its Head became dr hab. Marcin Tadeusz Łukaszewski, prof. at the FCUM.

At the beginning (from 1962), academic activity of the Chair of Music Education focused around the preparation of curricula and on methodological topics. In the period of 1974–1993, part of the Academy was the Institute of Music Pedagogy serving as a theoretical and research support for the Chair. Since it was founded, both units functioned independently. During prof. Kazimierz Gierżod’s term of office as Rector, the Chair of Music Education Theory (headed by Maria Przychodzińska-Kaciczak) and the Unit of Music Pedagogy (headed by prof. Zofia Konaszkiewicz) functioned in parallel, the latter one was part of IMP along with the Unit of Psychology of Music (headed by prof. Maria Manturzewska). After the Institute was closed down in 1993, an independent Chair of Psychology of Music (headed by prof. Maria Manturzewska, and after she retired, by dr hab. Barbara Kamińska) was founded and it became an inter-department unit.

Since the beginning of the academic year 2016/2017, the Chair has had three labs: Composition, Orchestration and Score Reading Laboratory, Voice Production Laboratory, Choral Vocal Studies Laboratory and Aural Training and Harmony Laboratory (which emerged from the closed down Inter-Department Chair of Aural Training).

In the academic year 2016/2017, the Chair also included the Psychology and Pedagogy of Music Laboratory, successor of the non-existing Inter-Department Chair of Psychology of Music (renamed Inter-Department Unit of Psychology of Music and closed down at the end of the academic year 2015/2016). The Chair closely collaborates with the Inter-Department Teaching Course. Since the academic year 2017/2018, the Chair of Music Education has supervised a new specialty of studies – Choir Vocal Studies (second cycle MA studies), which is aimed at training future professional choristers. This specialty is one of a kind in Poland.

The Chair of Music Education is a teaching and research institution. It provides content-related supervision to subjects connected with teaching preparation of students at the Department of Choir Conducting, Music Education, Church Music, Rhythmics and Dance.

The new model of the Chair relates to its widened research, teaching and artistic activity, which also includes supervising voice production and theoretical music subjects, i.e., aural training, harmony, harmony exercises, propaedeutics of composition, orchestration with arrangement and score reading, as well as psychology and pedagogy of music. These are also the sources of academic and artistic interest of the Chair’s employees, covering the topics such as 20th century music, Polish music, composition skills problems, applied analysis of behaviour in music education, studies on aural analysis of music pieces, aural training and solfege. Members of the Chair are four composers working at Department 5, aural training and voice production specialists, and academic teachers dealing with pedagogic preparation of students for the teaching profession: specialists on pedagogy with music pedagogy and psychology with psychology of music.

During prof. Zofia Konaszkiewicz’s term of office, research interests of the Chair’s employees and collaborators focused around a teacher-musician in the changing reality: a musician working as a teacher at different types of institutions, primarily at music schools but also at general schools, parallel education institutions, centres for children with disabilities, etc. In the period of 1992–2015, the basic problem described in the publications written by the Chair’s employees was the widely understood music education, which combined music didactics with a child’s development in a harmonious way. The work performed as part of the Chair was of an interdisciplinary nature. The analysed topics discussed such issues as “A musician as a teacher in the context of basic values”. Another studied problem was the formation of a music teacher as a specialist in his/her field and as a human being. Zofia Konaszkiewicz’s work entitled Szkice z pedagogiki muzycznej [An outline of music pedagogy] (2001), devoted to that subject, touches on axiological, psychological and teaching-related principles of functioning of a teacher-musician. Topics touched on as part of the second research area, i.e., “Music education in Poland”, included biographical studies, selected musical and educational institutions, or psychological and pedagogical problems of music education in the context of how Polish schools function plus studies on music schools’ evaluation by their graduates choosing music as their university major. A special place among them had the problems of music education departments at academies of music. Another research area covered “educational and therapeutic functions of music”. This issue was mainly discussed in MA theses. Students with prof. Z. Konaszkiewicz, Head of the Chair at that time, conducted music classes at institutions for children with disabilities. The last research subject discussed psychological and pedagogical problems in the profession of a ballet artist. These studies, which were connected with the functioning of ballet school students in Poland as well as adult dancers in ballet ensembles, were unique on a national level. These research topics were taken over by the Unit of Dance established in 2010.
