Professor Zbigniew Bagiński

born in Szczecin on 19 Jan­u­ary 1949. Com­poser and teacher.

He stud­ied com­po­si­tion under Tadeusz Paciorkiewicz at the State Higher School of Music in War­saw (where he grad­u­ated with hon­ours for his Sym­phony Music in 1972). He debuted with his Trip­tych for Clar­inet and Piano in 1968. He had his inter­na­tional debut at the Nordiske Musikdage fes­ti­val in Copen­hagen in 1974. Bagin­ski has com­posed sev­eral dozen works for sym­phony orches­tras, cham­ber orches­tras and soloists (for a full list of com­po­si­tions see: www.polmic.pl), which have been per­formed at var­i­ous pres­ti­gious musi­cal fes­ti­vals: World Music Days, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Fes­ti­val, Inven­tio­nen in Berlin, many times at the War­saw Autumn, the Musica Polonica Nova fes­ti­val, the War­saw Music meet­ings and also at numer­ous con­certs in Europe, USA and Canada.

The com­poser has been affil­i­ated with the Fry­deryk Chopin Uni­ver­sity of Music since 1974, first as a senior assis­tant then as a post­doc­toral fel­low (1979), assis­tant pro­fes­sor (1988), asso­ciate pro­fes­sor (1991) and full pro­fes­sor (2004). The title of Pro­fes­sor of Arts was con­ferred on Zbig­niew Bag­iński in 1996. At first he worked at the Depart­ment of Music Edu­ca­tion, then moved to the Depart­ment of Com­po­si­tion, Con­duct­ing and The­ory of Music in 1987. He has taught his own com­po­si­tion class since 1989. Many stu­dents have stud­ied under Zbig­niew Bag­iński: Ewa Gajkowska, Mag­dalena Frelek, Zbig­niew Słowik, Robert Wyszyński, Tomasz Mack­iewicz, Grze­gorz Mack­iewicz, Paweł Strz­elecki, Paweł Jankowski, Prze­mysław Zych and also Amar Jaa­far (Kuwait), Boris Som­mer­chaf (Rus­sia) and Geor­gios Tapes (Greece). In 1973–74 Bag­iński co-operated with the Insti­tute of Eccle­si­as­tic Musi­col­ogy at the Catholic Uni­ver­sity of Lublin and from 1981 on has also co-operated with the Depart­ment of Direct­ing at the Alek­sander Zel­werow­icz The­atre Acad­emy where he teaches his­tory of music. In 1987–89 Zbig­niew Bag­iński was Vice-Dean of the Depart­ment of Com­po­si­tion, Con­duct­ing and The­ory of Music. He has been Head of the Chair of Com­po­si­tion since Sep­tem­ber 2004. In 1989–99 he was Secretary-General of the Pol­ish Com­posers’ Asso­ci­a­tion and as of 2001 has been Chair­man of the War­saw Branch of the Association.
