Professor FCUM Urszula Janik, DMus Hab.

Urszula Janik started to learn flute playing at the H. Wieniawski State Secondary Music School in Łódź, class of Professor Antoni Wierzbiński under whose supervision she also completed university studies at the Academy of Music in Łódź (diploma with honours, 1984). She developed her skills at the Paris Conservatory, in class of Professor Alain Marion who founded a one-year scholarship for her as an award at the International J.P. Rampal Flute Competition in Paris. She continued her studies in Paris for the following year, holding a scholarship of the French government. In that time she also participated in master courses of interpretation in Nice (Professor Alain Marion), Bayreuth (Professor Milan Munclinger) and Duszniki (Professor Jerzy Mrozik).

During her studies she took part in numerous international flute competitions which brought her many awards and distinctions. Among the most important ones were: 1st award and special award at the All-Poland Flute Competition in Włoszkowice, 4th award at the International Flute competition in Ancona (Italy), 4th award at the 1st International Flute Competition in Kobe, and 4th award at the International J.S. Bach Flute Competition in Leipzig.

Straight after university graduation she started collaborating with the Polish Chamber Orchestra (now Sinfonia Varsovia) and she became its first flautist and soloist. The artistic personality of Urszula Janik was shaped during the orchestra’s collaboration with the greatest music figures of recent years, such as M. Argerich, Ch. Dutoit, J. Galway, I. Grafenauer, L. Hager, M. Maisky, A. Marion, A.-S. Mutter, K. Penderecki, J.-P. Rampal, M. Rostropovich and many others. A special place among them had Yehudi Menuhin under whose baton she performed as a soloist (and not only).

Urszula Janik has performed concerts with many symphony orchestras in Poland, and also as a soloist with Sinfonia Varsovia in many European countries. She debuted at the National Philharmonic playing the solo flute part in Andrzej Panufnik’s Sinfonia Concertante under the baton of Jerzy Katlewicz (she also made an archive recording of this piece with the Great Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio and Television). She made numerous archive recordings for the Polish Radio and Television. In March 2002 a CD on which she performs, containing chamber pieces by: C. Debussy, J. Ibert, M. Ravel and A. Roussel, was released.

Since January 2002 Urszula Janik has been the first flautist of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic in Warsaw.

Since October 2002 she has taught flute class at the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź. She is also a lecturer at numerous flute courses and workshops, e.g. in Nowy Sącz and Sarbinowo; she sits on the jury of national flute auditions and competitions. In May 2010 she was invited to the 8th International Flute Festival in Slovenia, where she performed concerts and ran flute workshops along with such flute music stars as Professor Peter-Lukas Graf and Emmanuel Pahud.

In 2012 she released a CD entitled ‘Barwy Fletu’ [The Colours of Flute] with the French flute literature masterpieces. In the same year a CD with her solo participation in Krzysztof Penderecki’s  Fonogrammi was released. The album was nominated for and then awarded with the Grammy 2013 award.

In February 2013 Urszula Janik obtained a post-doctoral degree in music arts. From the academic year of  2013/2014 she has been employed at the FCUM holding the post of Professor.

She holds the function of Vice-Dean of the Department of Instrumental Studies (term of office 2016–2020).
