Professor Józef Serafin

Born in Cra­cow in 1944. He grad­u­ated with hon­ours from the State Col­lege of Music in Cra­cow where he stud­ied the organ in Pro­fes­sor Bro­nisław Rutkowski and Pro­fes­sor Jan Jargoń’s classes. He stud­ied at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstel­lende Kunst in Vienna in Pro­fes­sor Anton Heiller’s class in 1970–72 and grad­u­ated with a diploma of dis­tinc­tion and spe­cial award.

Win­ner of the first prizes at the Pol­ish National Ancient Music Com­pe­ti­tion in Łódź (1964), the Pol­ish National Organ Com­pe­ti­tion in War­saw (1967) and the Inter­na­tional Organ Com­pe­ti­tion in Nurem­berg (1972).

He has per­formed in nearly every coun­try in Europe and also in Japan, Canada and the USA. He has made many radio, tele­vi­sion and record record­ings (Pol­skie Nagra­nia, Veri­ton, EMI-Electrola, Motette, Aulos, Dux). He has sat on the juries of many inter­na­tional organ com­pe­ti­tions, e.g., in Nurem­berg, Prague, Man­ches­ter, Beau­vais and Gdańsk.

Józef Ser­afin is a pro­fes­sor at the Fry­deryk Chopin Uni­ver­sity of Music in War­saw and a pro­fes­sor and head of the Chair of Organ at the Acad­emy of Music in Cra­cow. He has lec­tured in Japan, Canada and the USA. In 1996 he taught a mas­ter class in Seoul (South Korea). He is artis­tic direc­tor of the Inter­na­tional Organ and Cham­ber Music Fes­ti­val in Kamień Pomorski and Leżajsk.
