The New Music Course is an inter-department organisational unit attached to the Department of Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music, cooperating with other FCUM Departments and with selected higher education institutions. It associates the FCUM faculty members and students who are interested in widening their theoretical and practical knowledge connected with contemporary music in its aesthetical, practical and promotional dimensions.

The activity of the Course is carried out as part two fields:

Artistic and academic events organised by the New Music Course usually have a specific profile focusing on selected technical, performance-related or philosophical topics. They are discussed by outstanding Polish and foreign scholars invited, such as Prof. Anna Mikołejko, PhD Hab. (University of Warsaw), Justyna Humięcka-Jakubowska, PhD Hab. (Adam Mickiewicz University), Prof. Sharon Kanach (Universite Rouen, France), Prof. Benoit Gibson (Universidade de Évora, Portugal), Prof. Manuel Burgos (Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, Spain), lecturers of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music — Alicja Gronau-Osińska, PhD Hab., Edward Sielicki, DMus Hab., Prof. Marcin Błażewicz, DMus Hab. or Prof. Krzysztof Baculewski, PhD Hab.

Master interpretations of contemporary pieces, delivered by the artists collaborating with the Course, make the concerts extremely successful among the audiences and music critics. The group of outstanding promoters of new music who have recently performed during the concerts organised by the Course includes: Klaudiusz Baran, Maciej Nerkowski, Hashtag Ensemble, Monika Quinn, Magdalena Wajzner-Barska, Dariusz Przybylski, Maria Gabryś, Zuzanna Elster, Sławek A. Wróblewski, Krzysztof Knittel, and others.

Another very important part of the activity of the New Music Course is teaching. It invites students whose passion is developing their skills in contemporary music interpretation to participate in the concerts. These are preceded with lectures introducing an audience to the world of the presented pieces and the topics referring to composition techniques used in them, as well as the aesthetics and history of the newest music, making each listener benefit from their participation in the events organised by the Course to the fullest.
