The Unit of Com­pre­hen­sive Piano Stud­ies was founded in 1994 on the ini­tia­tive of Pro­fes­sor Marta Gozdecka-Lesz who man­age it to Octo­ber 2002.

One of the most impor­tant activ­i­ties of the Unit has been the up-dating of the com­pre­hen­sive piano stud­ies syl­labus for the dif­fer­ent depart­ments of the Acad­emy, fol­lowed by mod­i­fi­ca­tion of the pro­file of stu­dent audi­tions. Audi­tions now include poetry, clas­si­cal danc­ing, musi­cal quizzes and exhi­bi­tions of etch­ings and pic­tures by the War­saw Acad­emy of Art. The Unit of Com­pre­hen­sive Piano Stud­ies has also begun to pub­lish its own research bul­letins con­tain­ing arti­cles by mem­bers of the fac­ulty. Four bul­letins have now been pub­lished.

In 1996 the Depart­ment of Music Edu­ca­tion began to organ­ise a com­pe­ti­tion for stu­dents sit­ting their final exam­i­na­tion in “com­pre­hen­sive music stud­ies”. The sec­ond edi­tion of the com­pe­ti­tion took place in 1997. Two years later (1999) the com­pe­ti­tion evolved into the First “Piano Minia­ture” Com­pe­ti­tion. All stu­dents for whom the piano is not the main instru­ment can take part in this com­pe­ti­tion. The Sec­ond “Piano Minia­ture” Com­pe­ti­tion took place in Decem­ber 2000.

The pur­pose of the stu­dent audi­tions and com­pe­ti­tions is to acti­vate stu­dents, improve the level of instruc­tion, and thereby to improve the pres­tige of “com­pre­hen­sive piano stud­ies”.
