Interdepartmental Unit of Comprehensive Piano Studies

The Inter-Department Unit of General Piano was founded in 1994 at the initiative of prof. zw. dr hab. Marta Gozdecka-Lesz. The first Head of the Unit (in the period of 1994–2002) was prof. zw. dr hab. Marta Gozdecka-Lesz, then (2002–2014) this function was held by dr hab. Małgorzata Szpinalska, prof. at the FCUM. From 1 December 2014 to 31 August 2016 the function of Head of the Unit was held by dr hab. Marcin Tadeusz Łukaszewski, prof. at the FCUM. Currently, since 1 October 2016, this function is held by dr hab. Maria Gabryś, prof. at the FCUM.

The Interdepartmental Unit of Comprehensive Piano Studies gathers academic teachers who teach “general piano” subjects (Piano, Piano with Accompaniment and Accompaniment with a vista Reading), mainly at the Department of Choir Conducting, Music Education, Church Music, Rhythmics and Dance, as well as piano accompanists in choir conducting classes. Apart from working at the University, members of the Unit actively continue their artistic and academic activity, performing as soloists, chamber and orchestra musicians in Poland and abroad. They are prize-winners at numerous and diverse competitions of national and international range. They also cooperate with other FCUM Departments in Warsaw and Białystok.

Artists and teachers who have collaborated with the Unit, teaching general piano subjects or working as accompanists, are: Prof. Stanisława Raube (long-term faculty member of Department 5, well known in the music world in Poland as an editor of numerous piano works published by Czytelnik and PWM), Prof. Szabolcs Esztényi, Prof. Kazimierz Gierżod, Prof. Anna Jastrzębska-Quinn, as well as: Małgorzata Bisińska-Pawińska, Wojciech Kaleta, Andrzej Korybutiak, Kacper Miklaszewski, PhD, Antonina Paciorkiewicz-Dutkiewicz, Teresa Rosłoń-Esztényi, Ramiro Sanjines, Regina Stańczyk-Szczepańska, Magdalena Wajzner-Barska, and Tadeusz Wituski. Among the collaborators with the Inter-Department Unit of General Piano are also teachers from the FCUM’s Department of Instrumental and Educational Studies in Białystok, such as: Andrzej Czemiel, Barbara Idźkowska, Inga Kozłowska-Ligaj, Grażyna Orysiak, Barbara Wyszczelska, or Elżbieta Uss-Jońska.

In 1996, the Interdepartmental Unit of Comprehensive Piano Studies initiated performance competitions for pianists at the Department of Music Education (now Department of Choir Conducting, Music Education, Church Music, Rhythmics and Dance) for students taking their final exam in general piano. The Inter-University “Piano Miniature” Competition, which was organised in 1999, indirectly derived from the competitions for students ending their “general piano” subjects which were organised at the Department of Choir Conducting, Music Education, Church Music, Rhythmics and Dance and which took place in 1996 and 1997. The competition’s initiator was Prof. Marta Gozdecka-Lesz.

The 1st Inter-University “Piano Miniature” Competition was held on 6 March 1999 at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music (FCAM) in Warsaw. The Jury consisting of: Prof. Regina Smendzianka – Head, Prof. Marta Gozdecka-Lesz, Prof. Małgorzata Szpinalska, Senior Lecturer Urszula Gątkowska-Węgrzyn, and Assistant Prof. Marzena Szczepańska-Modrzejewska, awarded three equal prizes to students of the FCAM in Warsaw: Marek Fronc, Jakub Lenarczyk, and Paulina Stefanowicz (who also won the award for the best performance of Fryderyk Chopin’s piece), and two honorary mentions were awarded to: Maria Kamoda (from the Academy of Music in Cracow) and Piotr Spoz (FCAM in Warsaw).

The 2nd Inter-University “Piano Miniature” Competition was held on 9 December 2000 at the FCAM in Warsaw. The Jury consisting of: Prof. Marta Gozdecka-Lesz – Head, Senior Lecturer Urszula Gątkowska-Węgrzyn, Prof. Ryszard Hałaciński, Prof. Małgorzata Szpinalska, and Assistant Prof. Marzena Szczepańska-Modrzejewska, awarded three equal prizes to students of the FCAM in Warsaw: Renata Hajnos, Wojciech Marzec, and Aldona Nawrocka. Apart from that, there were six honorary mentions (for Katarzyna Kuligowska, Sabina Kołodziej, Renata Janos, Maria Kamoda, Magdalena Malec, Barbara Guran) and two prizes for the performance of Fryderyk Chopin’s piece (Rector’s Cup: Tatiana Kluczok from the Academy of Music in Wrocław; prize of the International Fryderyk Chopin Foundation: Maria Kamoda from the Academy of Music in Cracow).

Both competitions (in 1999 and 2000) were organised under the honorary patronage of the FCAM’s Rector.  Awards were founded by: International Fryderyk Chopin Foundation, Fryderyk Chopin Society, Ministry of Culture, National Library, Ars Polonia and Arkady publishers, FCAM Rector, and President of the National Bank of Poland, among others.

FCAM students also participated in other competitions addressed to non-piano majors, e.g. “Spring Piano Encounters, Cracow 2012”, organised by the Unit of Obligatory Piano of the Academy of Music in Cracow. Students: Marta Moneta (specialty: Choir Conducting, piano class of Prof. Irena Protasewicz) and Damian Skowroński (specialty: Church Music, piano class of Prof. Irena Protasewicz) were awarded with honorary mentions in the category: “piano four hands” and “two pianos” during the 2nd Spring Piano Encounters competition at the Academy of Music in Cracow (2014), and Katarzyna Karbownik (specialty: Conducting Music Ensembles, piano class of Prof. Irena Protasewicz) won the 3rd prize (category: “solo piano”) during the 3rd Spring Piano Encounters competition at the Academy of Music w Cracow (2014). Student Katarzyna Karbownik also decided to continue piano studies at the FCUM’s Department of Instrumental and Educational Studies in Białystok (2015), and took part in a monographic concert of Romuald Twardowski (29 November 2015, FCUM Concert Hall), performing the composer’s Small Concerto with an orchestra. Justyna Abramczyk (specialising in Conducting Music Ensembles, piano class of dr hab. Maria Gabryś, prof. at the FCUM) and Bartosz Krajewski (specialising in Choir Conducting, piano class of dr hab. Marcin T. Łukaszewski, prof. at the FCUM), who together form a piano duo, in 2017 won the 2nd prize (1st prize was not awarded) at the 14th International Študentská umelecká činnosť Competition organised by the Chair of Music (Department of Pedagogy) at the Catholic University in Ruzomberok (Slovakia). In the same year, Karolina Silkina (piano class of Senior Lecturer Hanna Stankiewicz-Jóźwicka) won the 1st prize at the 1st Inter-University Alternative Piano Confrontations at the Academy of Music in Cracow.

Piano class students have taken part in numerous concerts and auditions at the FCUM and outside of it, e.g. in the Creative Communities Church, Chamber Hall of the „Dziekanka” Student Dormitory Blind Artists’ in Warsaw, or Blind Artists’ Museum / Blind Artists’ Gallery of the Polish Association of the Blind (students of Prof. Marta Gozdecka-Lesz and Senior Lecturer Aleksandra Kowalik-Burdzy DMus), they also performed as soloists during a concert organised by FCUM Vice-Rector Prof. Ewa Iżykowska-Lipińska for the Azerbaijan Embassy, playing original music submitted by the embassy (students of Prof. Małgorzata Szpinalska). The student audition was enriched with poetry, classical dance, music riddles and exhibition of drawings and paintings by students of the Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw.

In January 2017, the Unit of General Piano organised a monographic concert of works by Marian Sawa (1937–2005) to celebrate his 80th birthday anniversary.

At the initiative of Prof. Małgorzata Szpinalska, the Unit has collaborated with the Section of General Piano of the K. Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław (head: Marzena Szczepańska-Butler), taking part in the above mentioned concerts.

The Interdepartmental Unit of Comprehensive Piano Studies also conducts academic activity. Five research bulletins have been published under its name by the FCAM Publisher. They mainly consisted of articles by the Unit employees, and the majority of texts covered topics in piano teaching as part of “general piano” subjects.

The main area of activity of the Interdepartmental Unit of Comprehensive Piano Studies is supervising the educational process of piano teaching. Piano classes are obligatory for all majors at the Department of Choir Conducting, Music Education, Church Music, Rhythmics and Dance. Due to a diverse structure of the Department, piano teaching is tailored to the needs of students of a given specialty or major. The curricula (now National Qualifications Framework) have been modified many times and adjusted to the changing regulations for higher education. In the period between the beginning of the Unit’s activity and 2002, also the curricula for the “general piano” subject teaching for separate Departments were updated.

Both student auditions and competitions are aimed at making students more active, integrating academic community, improving the level of education and thus enhancing the prestige of “general piano” subjects.
