The Chair of Music Edu­ca­tion is both a didac­tic and a research estab­lish­ment. It is in charge of the fol­low­ing courses: school music, rhyth­mics and bal­let ped­a­gogy, Unit of Edu­ca­tional Meth­ods.

Its main focus of research is the prob­lem of the musi­cian func­tion­ing in the role of teacher in chang­ing real­ity, i.e., the musi­cian who teaches in var­i­ous insti­tu­tions: music schools, com­pre­hen­sive schools, par­al­lel edu­ca­tion estab­lish­ments, estab­lish­ments for chil­dren requir­ing spe­cial care etc.

Reflec­tion is based on the broad def­i­n­i­tion of music edu­ca­tion where music edu­ca­tion is under­stood as the har­mo­nious com­bi­na­tion of music teach­ing and the devel­op­ment of the whole per­son. For this rea­son much of the work which is con­ducted at the Chair is inter­dis­ci­pli­nary.

The fol­low­ing major research prob­lems have been pur­sued:
- music edu­ca­tion in the con­text of basic val­ues. One of the most impor­tant sub-themes within this prob­lem is the for­ma­tion of the music edu­ca­tor as a music spe­cial­ist and as a per­son. The first pub­li­ca­tion in the cycle “the Musi­cian as Edu­ca­tor” has now appeared. It dis­cusses the prob­lem of the respon­si­bil­ity of the edu­ca­tor and is a col­lec­tion of mate­r­ial from two sci­en­tific sem­i­nars
- music edu­ca­tion in the con­text of Pol­ish tra­di­tion. Research cov­ers such areas as folk­lore in edu­ca­tion, the biogra­phies of music edu­ca­tors of great merit, the his­tory of selected music edu­ca­tion estab­lish­ments
- music edu­ca­tion in the con­text of the ongo­ing changes in gen­eral edu­ca­tion and the model of Pol­ish school­ing
- music edu­ca­tion — selected the­o­ret­i­cal and prac­ti­cal prob­lems. Research is cur­rently being done on the train­ing of teach­ers in music acad­e­mies and the pro­fes­sional iden­tity of stu­dents. Work has been pub­lished on the activ­i­ties of music edu­ca­tion depart­ments in Pol­ish music acad­e­mies. The func­tions of music in spe­cial edu­ca­tion are also being stud­ied.

The Chair is also doing unique research on bal­let teach­ers. A review of all master’s dis­ser­ta­tions on this sub­ject has now been pub­lished. Sev­eral works by bal­let teach­ers have also been published.
