The Chair of Aural Train­ing is respon­si­ble for research, teach­ing and con­sult­ing. It is made up of aural train­ing spe­cial­ists from Fry­deryk Chopin Uni­ver­sity of Music and acad­e­mies of music in Byd­goszcz, Gdańsk, Katow­ice, Łódź, Poz­nań and Wrocław. Until the year 2003, also the aural train­ing ped­a­gogues of Acad­emy of Music in Kraków had par­tic­i­pated in the activ­i­ties of the Chair.

Research is car­ried out in two units: the Unit of Aural Train­ing and the Unit of Aural Music Per­cep­tion. The fol­low­ing sub­ject areas are studied:

• his­tory and the­ory of aural training
• meth­ods of aural train­ing in Europe
• aural train­ing of musi­cians rep­re­sent­ing dif­fer­ent specialities
• aural per­cep­tion of music rep­re­sent­ing dif­fer­ent peri­ods, styles and genres.

The Chair doc­u­ments all Pol­ish research on aural train­ing and also col­lects scores and record­ings for the National Solfeg­gio Library which is now being devel­oped.

The Chair’s research find­ings and con­fer­ence pro­ceed­ings are pub­lished in the Chair of Aural Train­ing Bul­letin Z prac Miedzyuczel­ni­anej Kat­edry Ksz­tałce­nia Słuchu edited by D. Dobrowolska-Marucha.

The Chair’s teach­ing and con­sult­ing activ­i­ties include super­vi­sion of the teach­ing of aural train­ing at music acad­e­mies and less advanced lev­els of music instruc­tion. Spe­cial atten­tion is paid to the train­ing of teach­ers spe­cial­is­ing in aural train­ing. The Chair organ­ises courses, sem­i­nars and work­shops for pupils and teach­ers and also pub­lishes didac­tic mate­ri­als for music schools. Mem­bers of the Chair teach at national and inter­na­tional music courses. The Chair also super­vises mas­ters’ the­ses in aural train­ing all over the coun­try.

The Chair con­sults in the fol­low­ing areas:

• it eval­u­ates and reviews didac­tic and research pub­li­ca­tions, syl­labuses and research projects
• its mem­bers sit on exam­i­na­tion com­mit­tees appointed by the Min­istry of Cul­ture and Fine Arts for the pur­pose of exam­in­ing teachers
• it inspects and eval­u­ates lessons at music schools
• it runs a con­sul­ta­tion cen­tre for pupils and pedagogues
• it pro­duces and pub­lishes teach­ing materials.

The Chair of Aural Train­ing co-operates with the Chair of Psy­chol­ogy of Music , the Chair of Choir Con­duct­ing, Musi­cal Edu­ca­tion, Church Music, Rhyth­mics and Dance, the Chair of Musi­cal Acoustics and sev­eral for­eign cen­tres: Con­ser­va­toire de Musique (Nev­ers), Con­ser­va­toire National de Paris and the Kodály Insti­tute in Kecskemét.
