CHAIR OF PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSICThe Interdepartmental Chair of Psychology of Music at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music is a research and consulting unit.
The Chair’s research activities focus on the psychological foundations of musical education and the theoretical bases of counselling for music schools students and professional musicians.
The Chair conducts research in the following areas:
- the psychological determinants of success in the music study and professional activities
- musical psychometrics and diagnostics (measurement of music attitudes, preferences, aptitudes and achievements)
- stress and music performance anxiety
- artistic and professional development of musicians over the life-span
- psychological foundations of the evaluation in music
- musical development throughout the life-span
- psychological foundations of music teaching and learning
- music for individuals with special psychological and educational needs.
The Chair’s teaching activities include classes in general and music psychology for students at all the departments of the University and of the Teacher’s College. It also conducts periodical open seminars and training courses for psychologists, music teachers, musicologists and musicians.
2001–2006 the Chair have been conducted a Postgraduate Course in the Psychology of Music. The Chair also publishes classical and current works on the psychology of music, musical aptitude and achievement tests, seminar materials, conference proceedings etc.
The Chair Faculty combines psychological competency with musical education. It consults diploma works, master degree, doctoral, post-doctoral dissertations in the field of the psychology of music.
The Chair has an information service and lends diagnostic instruments to researchers. The Chair is in continual contact with psychologists at home and abroad including Professors John A. Sloboda (Keele University, UK), Heiner Gembris (Universität Paderborn, Germany), Susan Hallam (London University, UK), Edwin E. Gordon (USA), David Hargreaves (Roehampton University, London UK), Adina Mornell (Kunst Universität, Graz, Austria), Richard Parncutt (Universität Graz, Austria), Rosamund Shuter (UK) and Doreen Bridges (Australia).
The Chair is a member of the international Euro TEAM group, which investigates the professional development of music teachers.
It co-operates with the International Kodály Society and the Zoltán Kodály Institute in Kecskemet, Hungary.
The Chair Faculty are members of the advisory board of the Music is for Everybody Foundation.
