CHAIR OF PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC

The Inter­de­part­men­tal Chair of Psy­chol­ogy of Music at the Fry­deryk Chopin Uni­ver­sity of Music is a research and con­sult­ing unit.
The Chair’s research activ­i­ties focus on the psy­cho­log­i­cal foun­da­tions of musi­cal edu­ca­tion and the the­o­ret­i­cal bases of coun­selling for music schools stu­dents and pro­fes­sional musi­cians.
The Chair con­ducts research in the fol­low­ing areas:

• the psy­cho­log­i­cal deter­mi­nants of suc­cess in the music study and pro­fes­sional activities
• musi­cal psy­cho­met­rics and diag­nos­tics (mea­sure­ment of music atti­tudes, pref­er­ences, apti­tudes and achievements)
• stress and music per­for­mance anxiety
• artis­tic and pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment of musi­cians over the life-span
• psy­cho­log­i­cal foun­da­tions of the eval­u­a­tion in music
• musi­cal devel­op­ment through­out the life-span
• psy­cho­log­i­cal foun­da­tions of music teach­ing and learning
• music for indi­vid­u­als with spe­cial psy­cho­log­i­cal and edu­ca­tional needs.

The Chair’s teach­ing activ­i­ties include classes in gen­eral and music psy­chol­ogy for stu­dents at all the depart­ments of the Uni­ver­sity and of the Teacher’s Col­lege. It also con­ducts peri­od­i­cal open sem­i­nars and train­ing courses for psy­chol­o­gists, music teach­ers, musi­col­o­gists and musi­cians.
2001–2006 the Chair have been con­ducted a Post­grad­u­ate Course in the Psy­chol­ogy of Music. The Chair also pub­lishes clas­si­cal and cur­rent works on the psy­chol­ogy of music, musi­cal apti­tude and achieve­ment tests, sem­i­nar mate­ri­als, con­fer­ence pro­ceed­ings etc.
The Chair Fac­ulty com­bines psy­cho­log­i­cal com­pe­tency with musi­cal edu­ca­tion. It con­sults diploma works, mas­ter degree, doc­toral, post-doctoral dis­ser­ta­tions in the field of the psy­chol­ogy of music.
The Chair has an infor­ma­tion ser­vice and lends diag­nos­tic instru­ments to researchers. The Chair is in con­tin­ual con­tact with psy­chol­o­gists at home and abroad includ­ing Pro­fes­sors John A. Slo­boda (Keele Uni­ver­sity, UK), Heiner Gem­bris (Uni­ver­sität Pader­born, Ger­many), Susan Hal­lam (Lon­don Uni­ver­sity, UK), Edwin E. Gor­don (USA), David Har­g­reaves (Roe­hamp­ton Uni­ver­sity, Lon­don UK), Adina Mor­nell (Kunst Uni­ver­sität, Graz, Aus­tria), Richard Parn­cutt (Uni­ver­sität Graz, Aus­tria), Rosamund Shuter (UK) and Doreen Bridges (Aus­tralia).
The Chair is a mem­ber of the inter­na­tional Euro TEAM group, which inves­ti­gates the pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment of music teach­ers.
It co-operates with the Inter­na­tional Kodály Soci­ety and the Zoltán Kodály Insti­tute in Kecskemet, Hun­gary.
The Chair Fac­ulty are mem­bers of the advi­sory board of the Music is for Every­body Foun­da­tion.
