Research
The University’s multi-directional research activity is conducted both in the field of science (Interdepartmental Chair of Music Psychology, Chair of Music Education, Chair of Theory of Music, Chair of Audiology and Phoniatrics, Chair of Musical Acoustics) and arts (instrumental chairs, Chair of Composition, Chair of Conducting, Chair of Vocal Studies, Interuniversitary Unit of Aural Training, Chair of Sound Engineering) by eighteen chairs and three institutes.
The scientific research activity covers problems often overlooked by other research centres, including the psychology and theory of music, theory of music pedagogy and musical upbringing, editor’s studies of Fryderyk Chopin’s body of work, instrumental study, acoustics and musical phoniatrics. Priority is given to research focusing on Polish music (Chopin’s work) and the theory of 20th century music.
Other issues within the scope of the researchers’ interest are: musical education in Poland; works of composers and performers of early and contemporary music; reception and perception of music; perception of tone, pitch and loudness of sound; aural memory; analysis of the human voice and respiratory organ; musical psychometrics and psychodiagnostics; modern means of generating and transmitting sound; music teachers’ professional development; musical development within the human lifetime.
The system of continuous and interdisciplinary research includes basic and applied works aimed at supporting the needs of musical education and the country’s culture and economy. These works are conducted in the following fields: study of fine arts, psychology, pedagogy, medical sciences, engineering and environmental protection, sociology and philosophy. The interdisciplinary research teams are made up of musicians, music theoreticians, plastic artists, psychologists, pedagogues, physicians, physiologists, physicists, engineers and IT specialists. The results of their work, merging such research fields as science, technology and arts, have been received with much interest by several national and international research centres.
Research and Publishing The Research Unit schedules and coordinates research work in cooperation with other FCUM units, raises research funds and manages research budgets. Members of the unit participate in organising seminars and conferences, collects data for assessment of academic work and prepares research analyses. The Research Unit’s activities also include co-implementation of research projects funded by the European Union.
