The ensemble was founded in 1967. It consist of Professors Tadeusz Gadzina and Paweł Łosakiewicz (violin), Ryszard Duź (viola) and cellist Marian Wasiółka. They performed in all the countries of Europe and both Americas. For many years the ensemble was a permanent guest of the Joliette Festival in Canada, apart from this it participated in the most important European festivals, including “The Warsaw Autumn” Festival (for almost 20 years), receiving its prize named “Orfeus”.
The ensemble is a prize-winner of the competitions in Vienna (1971), Bordeaux (1972) and Munich (1973), as well as the ZKP (1986, 1990) and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Culture (2002) awards, and prizes for their recordings (“Diapason d’Or” for the album Musique de Chambre with W. Lutosławski’s music and for the recording of E. Grieg’s quartets).
A large part of their enormous repertoire has been recorded on 30 albums released by such companies as Sonoton Pro Viva, Accord, Tudor, Pro Viva, Olimpia, Col Legno, Polskie Nagrania, Tonpress, Veriton, Acte Préalable. The quartet cooperated with the most outstanding musicians of the world, for example: Gidon Kremer, Grigorij Zhislin, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Bella Davidovich, András Schiff, Ralf Gothóni, Szábolcs Esztényi, Elżbieta Gajewska, Janusz Olejniczak, Władysław Kłosiewicz, Adam Makowicz, Stefan Kamasa, Tomasz Strahl and others.
The members of the ensemble are lecturers at music universities, where they rum instrumental and chamber master classes.
