Chair of Musical Acoustics

A. Mi¶kiewicz Chair of Musical Acoustics was founded by Professor Andrzej Rakowski who served as its head until his retirement in 2001. The Chair's teaching activity is related to technical sciences and to psychology and physiology of hearing. The Chair's faculty teach the following courses: fundamentals of hearing, timbre solfege, acoustics, electroacoustics, musical acoustics, room acoustics, mathematics, fundamentals of electronics, signal theory, recording technology and technical laboratory practicum. Timbre solfege is a unique course in technical listening developed at the Chair of Musical Acoustics. The course's main goal of developing analytical listening skills is achieved by special laboratory exercises which consist of various listening tasks.

The research activity of the Chair of Musical Acoustics concerns psychological and physiological acoustics, methodology of sound quality assessment, selected problems of room acoustics and problems of hearing hazards caused by exposure to musical sounds. Faculty and staff members of the Chair have participated in research projects supported by the Polish Committee for Scientific Research.
Results of research conducted at the Chair were published in various Polish and international scientific journals, such as Acta Acustica, Archives of Acoustics, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, Musicae Scientiae and Music Perception. Faculty members participated in numerous scientific congresses and symposia in Poland and abroad. Fifteen doctoral dissertations and six post-doctoral dissertations (habilitacja) were prepared at the Chair of Musical Acoustics. Professor Andrzej Rakowski, associate member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, is currently the President of the Committee of Acoustics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the President of the European Society for Cognitive Sciences in Music (ESCOM).
