Chair of Music Education

The Chair of Music Education is both a didactic and a research establishment. It is in charge of the following courses: school music, rhythmics and ballet pedagogy, Unit of Educational Methods.

Its main focus of research is the problem of the musician functioning in the role of teacher in changing reality, i.e., the musician who teaches in various institutions: music schools, comprehensive schools, parallel education establishments, establishments for children requiring special care etc.

Reflection is based on the broad definition of music education where music education is understood as the harmonious combination of music teaching and the development of the whole person. For this reason much of the work which is conducted at the Chair is interdisciplinary.

The following major research problems have been pursued:
- music education in the context of basic values. One of the most important sub-themes within this problem is the formation of the music educator as a music specialist and as a person. The first publication in the cycle "the Musician as Educator" has now appeared. It discusses the problem of the responsibility of the educator and is a collection of material from two scientific seminars
- music education in the context of Polish tradition. Research covers such areas as folklore in education, the biographies of music educators of great merit, the history of selected music education establishments
- music education in the context of the ongoing changes in general education and the model of Polish schooling
- music education - selected theoretical and practical problems. Research is currently being done on the training of teachers in music academies and the professional identity of students. Work has been published on the activities of music education departments in Polish music academies. The functions of music in special education are also being studied.

The Chair is also doing unique research on ballet teachers. A review of all master's dissertations on this subject has now been published. Several works by ballet teachers have also been published.
