Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music

This department is entitled to confer doctoral and post-doctoral degrees (doctor of art, habilitated doctor of art) in composition and - as the only scientific unit in the artistic higher education system - the doctor of liberal arts in "art sciences" degree. The department offers two lines of training, conducting and composition, and theory of music, in three specialisations: composition, symphonic and operatic conducting, and theory of music.

Composition trains people who create works of music. The purpose of this course is to achieve comprehensive knowledge and skills in composing technique, with particular focus on contemporary composing techniques. Principal subjects: composition, instrumentation, harmony, counterpoint, contemporary composing techniques, electroacoustic music. The following professors teach composition classes: Krzysztof Baculewski, Zbigniew Bagiński,Marcin Błażewicz, Marian Borkowski, Stanisław Moryto.

Symphony and Opera Conducting Symphonic and operatic conducting trains conductors who conduct symphony orchestras and opera theatre orchestras. The purpose of this course is to master performance (i.e., conducting) technique and the basic symphonic, operatic and oratorio repertory and also to develop one's ability to work with a musical ensemble. Principal subjects: conducting, score reading, orchestra, instrumentation, ear training, harmony, counterpoint. The following professors teach conducting classes: Tomasz Bugaj, Ryszard Dudek, Szymon Kawalla, Marek Pijarowski, Antoni Wit.

Theory of Music trains theorists to do scientific research and to teach theoretical subjects. It also trains journalists, lecturers and musical event organisers and prepares students to work for the press, radio and television. Principal subjects: analysis of works of music, history of theory of music, research technology, music theory seminar, musical literature, history of music, history of Polish music, musical forms seminar, the history of musical forms, musical critique seminar, analysis of musical performance, musical styles, harmony, counterpoint, history of harmony and counterpoint, ear training. The following professors teach the principal subjects: Krzysztof Baculewski, Ludwik Bielawski, Danuta Dobrowolska-Marucha, Krzysztof Heering, Wojciech Nowik, Izabela Targonska, Walentyna Węgrzyn-Klisowska.
