Postgraduate Postgraduate Vocal Studies

Organiser: Vocal Department

Head:   Postdoctoral Fellow Dr hab. Mikołaj Moroz

The Postgraduate Studies at the Vocal Department, Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, are addressed to holders of a diploma in higher education with experience in solo singing who would like to perfect their vocal skills and broaden their knowledge of vocalism. The Postgraduate Studies course will develop students' knowledge of the singing profession from the point of view of both the specific nature of the music theatre and the stage. It will also help them to perfect their singing skills and their knowledge of the specific problems involved in learning to sing. Students who have completed the Postgraduate Studies will have a sound knowledge of vocalism and will be able to sing in various styles. Classes are held once a month, on every third Saturday of the month.

As of the academic year 2008/2009 the Vocal Department Postgraduate Studies will introduce three subjects which will be compulsory for four semesters and the fifth semester will be a master semester whose purpose is to prepare students for their final recital.

Subject one: Solo Singing - Master Class
This class is taught in groups of 3 - 6. One session lasts 3 hours and is conducted as a group lesson. Every student must present his/her program individually and the group observes the lesson in progress. The first semester ends with an assessment for credit and semesters two, three and four end with examinations.
Subject two: Stage directing issues
This class is taught in groups of 3 - 6. One session lasts 2 hours and is conducted in the form of a lecture and exercises. The teacher discusses rendering styles throughout the history of the music theatre. Exercises consist in the preparation of selected fragments of works for the stage. The actual scope of work depends on the teacher. Odd semesters end with assessments for credit and even semesters end with an examination.
Subject three: Vocal ensembles - working with the conductor
This class is taught in groups of 3 - 6. One session lasts 3 hours and is conducted in the form of exercises. Students learn vocal discipline in co-operation with the conductor on the basis of fragments of works of music, sung solo and in groups. Odd semesters end with assessments for credit and even semesters end with an examination.

Students can have additional individual tutorials with a singing pedagogue of their choice. One hour with a pianist costs about 250 PLN.
