Andrzej Sylwester Zieliñski, musician and teacher (full professor) was born in W±growiec on 26 November 1937.
He graduated from the State College of Music (now the Academy of Music) in Krakow in 1962 where he studied the cello under Assistant Professor Zofia Adamska. He continued as a post-graduate student under M. Rostropovich at the P. Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow in 1966-1967. He obtained his 2nd degree in music in 1984 and became full professor in 1992. He was Vice-dean of the Bialystok Branch of the F. Chopin Academy of Music (1986-1990); Prorector for Students' Affairs and Bialystok Branch Affairs at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in 1991-1996; Secretary of State (2000-2001) and Minister of Culture and National Heritage (2001).

Artistic activities: soloist (cello); symphony and chamber orchestra concertmaster and soloist in Krakow (1962), Poznan (1963-1966), Warsaw (1967-1991), Stockholm (1969-1970), and Teheran (1976-1977); record company, radio and television recordings. He gave the first performance of D. B. Kabalewski's cello concerto and the recently recovered concerto by I. J. Pleyel (which he also elaborated and edited for publishing in PWM in 1994). He has attended many festivals including the Masters of the Polish Violin and Stars Promote (with his former students). He has sat on the juries of music competitions in Poland and abroad; organised and lectured at music seminars and workshops in Poland and abroad including the International Master Courses in Music Interpretation in Lancut and Seul (South Korea) in 1994-1997 and the Summer Academy of Music in Zagan. He has been artistic director (since 2002) of the Palace Encounters with Music at the PAN edifice in Jablonna and Verba Sacra, a permanent series of liturgical presentations. He is a member of the Polish Musical Artists' Association (which he joined in 1993).

Teaching activities: State College of Music (now the Academy of Music) in Poznan (1964-1977); Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and its Bialystok Branch (since 1978; assistant professor 1984-1991, associate professor 1991-1996, full professor since 1996); he teaches the cello at the Instrumental Department of the F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and the Bialystok Branch; he also teaches the cello at secondary music schools in Warsaw and Bialystok. He has educated more than 100 cellists, many of whom have won domestic and international competitions, who are now orchestra leaders, concertmasters and renowned soloists and teachers at home and abroad. He was vice-president then president of the Central Qualifying Commission for Professional Specialisation Degrees at the Centre for Artistic Education at the Ministry of Culture and Art (1990-1999). As of 2003 he has been an expert on qualifying commissions or examination boards for teachers.
