Professor Henryk Skarżyński, M.D., Hab.
Henryk Skarżyński was born in Rosochate Koscielne in the Podlaskie Voivodeship on 3 January 1954. In 1979 he graduated from the Medical Academy in Warsaw and began to work at the Department of Otolaryngology of the Central Clinical Hospital, Warsaw Medical Academy. He received his M.D. in 1983 and his postgraduate degree (Dr hab.) in 1989. He was nominated associate professor of the Medical Academy in 1993 and obtained his full, titular professorship in 1995.
In 1993 Professor H. Skarżyński founded "Cochlear Centre", the Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Rehabilitation Centre for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. In 1996 this Centre became the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing and Professor H. Skarżyński was appointed its Director. In 2003 an ultramodern diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation complex, the International Hearing and Speech Centre, was opened in Kajetany. Professor H. Skarżyński inspired and organised this initiative.
In 2002 Professor Henryk Skarżyński became head of the Chair of Audiology and Phoniatrics at the F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw where he organised a state of the art diagnostic laboratory and, together with his collaborators, began to realise many original research projects concerning voice and speech, the development of auditory attention, and the effects of music on the inner ear and intellectual development.
Professor H. Skarżyński is the author or co-author of over 800 scientific works which he has published at home and abroad.
He is a member of many scientific societies including the prestigious world organisation of otolaryngologists, Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum. He is also the founding member of the European Academy of Otology and Neuro-Otology (EAONO), elected member of the American Academy of Audiology, honorary member of the Slovakian Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Association, honorary professor of the Department of Audiology and Speech Therapy at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, USA and member of the European Society for Artificial Organs.
