Professor Bogus³aw Madey

(1932-2004)

Polish conductor, composer, pianist, and educator, received MA degrees in Composition, Piano and Conducting - all three diplomas with distinction - from the Academy of Music in Poznan, Poland; he also studied Symphonic Conducting, Opera Conducting and Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (England).

He has held the following posts: Assistant Conductor with the Poznan Philharmonic, and Piano Teacher at the Academy of Music, Poznan, 1958-59; Conductor at the Grand Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Warsaw, 1960-72; Conductor of Scout Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw, 1961-66; Teacher of Conducting and Opera Ensemble at the Chopin Academy of Music, Warszaw 1960-67; Professor of Conducting at the same Academy, since 1967-, where he was 1969-71 and from 1997 was also Head of the Chair of Conducting; Dean of the Department of Composition, Conducting and Theory of Music, 1975-78; and was Rector of the same Academy of Music, 1978-81.
President of the Association Europeenne des Conservatoires, Academies de Musique et Musikhochschulen, 1978-82; Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Grand Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Lodz, 1972-77.
Guest Conductor of Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf (German Federal Republic), 1973-76; Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Baltic Philharmonic and Opera Theatre in Gdansk, 1981-83; Guest Conductor of Badisches Opera Staatstheater in Karlsruhe (German Federal Republic), 1983-87.
From 1999 he was Resident Conductor of Daegu City Symphony Orchestra in South Korea. In 1995 and 1997-98 he was Visiting Professor at Keimyung University in Daegu in South Korea.
He was a member of the Union of Polish Composers, Warsaw, and of the Association of Authors and Composers "ZAIKS", also in Warsaw.

He had over 300 works in his symphonic repertoire and over 80 works in opera and ballet repertoire.
He has appeared in Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Egypt, France, the German Federal Republic, Greece, Great Britain, Italy, Luxemburg, Russia, South America, South Korea, the USA and Yugoslavia; he has given various radio, TV, film performances and recordings.

His compositions include: Allegro, Variations, Sonatina, 5 Preludes - for piano; Suite, Ballet Scene, Dancing Impressions, Dramatic Overture, Scherzo Fantastico - for orchestra; Concerto for piano and orchestra, Concerto for flute and orchestra, Transfigurations (concerto) for voice and instruments, Metamorphoses - Variations on a theme of Paganini for piano and orchestra; songs, theatre music (and others).

He was awarded the Composer's Prize in the All-Polish Symphonic Competition, Warsaw, 1955, the 30-Years Medal of Poland, and the Gold Cross of Merit, 1974, the Second Prize of the Minister of Culture and Art, Warsaw, 1976, and named Meritorious Person in Culture, Warsaw, 1977; decorated Knight of Order "Polonia Restituta", 1979, the First Prize of the Minister of Culture and Art, Warsaw, 1982; the 40-Years Medal of Poland, 1984.
