Professor Jerzy Jurek
Born 1945 in Ludwinów (Province of Warsaw) He began to learn to play the accordion in 1955 at the State Primary Music School in Warsaw in Jerzy Orzechowski's class.
He continued his studies at the No. 1 State Secondary School in Warsaw in Wlodzimierz Lech Puchnowski's class in 1960-1964 (and graduated with honours) then at the State College of Music in Warsaw in Lecturer Wlodzimierz Lech Puchnowski's class in 1964-1967 (and graduated with honours). He was the first person in Poland to graduate with a diploma in accordion playing.
In 1972 he did a period of artistic and teaching training at the Rimsky-Korsakov Institute in Leningrad under the supervision of Assistant Professor Anatolij Surkov, Professor Sergei Kolobkov and Professor Victor Govorushko.
He is a prize winner of the following competitions:
- The International Accordion Competition in Pallanza (Italy) - 1961, 3rd prize
- The International Accordion Competition in Baden-Baden (Germany) - 1963
- The Polish National Accordion Competition in Lodz - 1964, 1st prize
- The International Accordion Competition in Klingenthal (Germany) - 1964, 6th place
- The International Accordion Competition in Versailles (France) - 1966, bronze medal
- The International Chamber Ensemble Competition in Annemasse (France) - 1972, 1st prize, gold medal, in the chamber ensemble category.
In 1961-1988 he was primarius of the Warsaw Accordion Quintet, an ensemble established and led by Professor Wlodzimierz Lecz Puchnowski and in 1988-1994 he was Artistic Manager of this group. The Quintet has taken part in many renowned music festivals at home and abroad and has performed in Poland, Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Jordan, Korea, Germany, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Italy.
Professor Jerzy Jurek has repeatedly judged Polish and international accordion competitions and has taught at International Courses of Music Interpretation.
He is Full Professor at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and Associate Professor at the Grazyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Music Academy in Lodz. Many renowned accordionists, winners of international accordion competitions at home and abroad, have studied at his accordion classes at the Warsaw and Lodz Music Academies.
In period 1999-2005 he was Dean, and since 2005 he has been Deputy Dean of the Instrumental Studies at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music. He is also Vice-chairman of the Association of Polish Accordionists.
